Why the Carabao and Herons are
Friends
A
big fat carabao feeling tired and sleepy lay down on a grassy field. There were
two white birds near him. One of the birds was old mother heron who was very
sick. Beside her was a baby heron that could not walk. Oid Mother Heron
requested the carabao to take care of he,, baby heron. She said, "I am
very sick. Very soon I will die. Will you take care of my baby heron? She ha,
been able to walk since she was born."
The
carabao said, "How do you expect me to take care of a lame bird?" The
carabao looked back and saw the deaci heron. He heard the cry of the small
bird. Hthe bird and took pity on it. He knew that i like him could do something
for the lame.
The
carabao covered the dead heron with a pile of grasses. He saw a big worm on the
grass. He fed it to the little hungry bird. Every morning, the carabao fed the
lame bird with a worm. Not long after the bird grew strong. Early one morning
as the carabao was giving her food, the bird stood on her feet, flapped her
wings and said, "I've grown strong enough to fly and look for food. You're
very kind to me. You are a very good friend. Thank you very much." I'm
glad you can walk now. You need not thank me. I am proud to have you as my
friend." Consequently, carabaos and the herons became friends. Sometimes
vou can see a heron standing on the carabao's back.
